### The Harvard University Department of Music, together with the Harvard Library and Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, hosted a series of events celebrating the life and legacy of groundbreaking music historian Eileen Southern during the 2021-22 academic year. This year marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of Southern’s landmark work, *The Music of Black Americans* (W. W. Norton), a now-legendary text that represents an historic intervention into the European-dominated field of musicology and helped to launch the field of Black music studies.
